Deaf School in Pakistan

Global Deaf Muslim is proud to acknowledge and recognize the wonderful efforts of a Deaf Muslim woman named Zara Husian for her efforts of setting up a deaf school called Lahore Speech & Language School at Lahore, Pakistan. Sister Zara and other staffs built the school with two goals in mind: literacy and education for Deaf Pakistanis. Global Deaf Muslim is about educating all Deaf Muslims in the world about Islam and empower them to learn about Islam. LSLS is doing the same thing but for Deaf Pakistanis.

LSLS is located at a lovely building that is designed for children in mind with playground, activities, and room layouts. LSLS serves Deaf Pakistanis from toddlers to adults, helping them to learn language, communication, and interaction. LSLS also provides Islamic education to Deaf Pakistanis, teaching them the pillars of Islam and how to lead a life of Muslim. LSLS is not a school but a social service to help Deaf Pakistanis to be part of Pakistani society through communication. According to Sister Zara, Pakistan does not provide an adequate accessibility for Deaf Pakistanis in education.

They are in need of funds to pay rent, to expand services, to provide free education for poor Deaf Pakistanis, and to finance operating expenses. GDM at Islamic Culture Center of NYC

President Nashiru and his companions paid a visit to Islamic Culture Center of New York to meet with gracious and kind imam named Shamsi Ali. President Nashiru and Imam Shamsi Ali discussed about Global Deaf Muslim, the Deaf Muslims in NYC, and how Islamic Culture Center of New York can work with GDM to outreach to Deaf Muslim Yorkers. President Nashiru wants to have a place in New York City for Deaf Muslims to attend to pray, to discuss Islam, to receive Islamic education, and socialize with members of Ummah.

The meeting was fruitful and Nashiru with his companions enjoyed the beautiful mosque, the discussion of Islam with new believers, and the time spent at the Center. Nashiru and Imam Shamsi Ali looked forward to work together for Deaf in Islam. After the visitation, Nashiru and his companions attended Arab Culture Festival at West Brooklyn.

ISNA 2010 at Chicago

GDM went to Chicago, IL during first weekend of July to attend Islamic Society of North America for second time. President Nashiru and other officers came to Chicago to represent GDM. GDM sponsored several Deaf Sisters and Brothers from Virgina and Minneapolis to attend ISNA.

GDM raised money at the conference and exposed the audience about Deaf in Islam. The more the Sisters and Brothers know about Deaf in Islam, the more GDM can help Deaf Sisters and Brothers.

About 40 people attended the picnic at Hains Park. People brought foods such as pakistani chickens, algerian bread, hotdogs, fruits, dates, and sweets. The people played soccer, tried to fly a kite, and played a game of cricket. It was a good time for everyone despites bugs giving them troubles sometimes.

Mash allah, Global Deaf Muslim’s trip to Islamic Circle of North America at Hartford, CT was a wonderful experiences for those who attended! GDM wants to thank to ICNA for their generosity and support. GDM gives thanks to donors that helped covering the cost of transportation and lodge. GDM is very happy that the members and officers gave their best efforts to make the trip to be a success! GDM also want to thank Crescent Foods for donating one of their booths to us so GDM can have 2 tables to reach more people.

Global Deaf Muslim is grateful to Islamic Relief USA for participating in our Georgetown University Conference as one of the sponsors of the conference and GDM in particular and the Deaf Community in the US recognizes the significance of their sponsorship that had helped us organized a successful conference at Georgetown University.

GDM is now 501(c) 3 tax-exempt !

With the name change approved by NY state and a call to IRS, President Nashiru finally obtained a formal approval of Global Deaf Muslim tax-exempt status under Internal Revenue Code 501 (c) 3. An official letter will be sent to President, which will be posted on GDM website.

Starting today, GDM can proclaim that it is a tax-exempt organization and is qualified to receive all qualified donations. The donors will receive a letter, acknowledging their donation so the donation can be claimed on the tax return.

Global Deaf Muslim is hosting a gathering of Deaf Muslims and Hearing Muslims who want to learn about Deaf Culture at Hains Point Park in Washington DC ‘s Basin.
Date: June 19th, 2010
Time: 11am to dusk

Please bring foods and drinks to share. GDM will provide foods and drinks. Throw what you can cook and make! Bring soccer ball, Frisbee, football, cricket, or anything to play on the grass field! If bad weather then reschedule to next weekend, June 25th.
